Nerography: what inspires me to create….

Neurons.

Your brain is the control center of the miraculous body that you live in.  The brain functions through a complex electrochemical process of making connections between neurons.  Your brain can make up to 60 trillion connections at any given moment!!*  So how do these connections happen?

Neurons communicate with each other through an electrochemical process of passing ions along pathways, or a synapse, that connects neurons.  Neurons and their pathways are present when you are born already functioning.  The transmission of information along the synapses from neuron to neuron is what enables you to problem solve, walk, run and even dream!

As you grow older, your brain adds new connections between neurons enabling you to process new experiences or subtracts connections that are rarely used.  The good news is that your brain has plasticity which allows it to change as you add stimulus.  That means that old habits that are no longer useful can be dropped out and new habits can be established at any time.

So let’s bring neurons around to the creativity process.  Establishing a creative practice, just like a gratitude practice, or even a wake up in the morning practice, will physically change your brain!!  By repeating a practice, you strengthen the connections between the neuron receptors used in the practice.  These neurons grow stronger and become the favored way that your brain likes to function.  You can actually change your brain into becoming more creative!!

A Russian psychologist, Pavel Piskarev, created the methods and process of an art form called Neurograhica. He believed that Neurography connects the conscious and unconscious mind allowing healing and transformation.  It is a simple method of drawing that I find extremely peaceful to fill an empty moment, or useful as a method to work through difficult periods in my life.  In the How I Create section of this journal entry, I show you the easy step by step method of creating a Neurological Drawing.

Journal Prompt:

As you read this passage, did you learn anything new or surprising about your brain?  Do you believe you can change the way your brain thinks?  Are there patterns in your life that you would like to change or patterns that you would like to bring to your life?

Maybe an image comes up of a moment, a person, an object that represents potential for change in your life.  Try a little sketch of something that represents that thing.

Hugs to you all
